Team Member Highlight – John Billman

After nearly 37 years in the building trades, John joined Nino Homes in October 2021 as a project superintendent on the Nino Homes at Vintage Meadows project. In his senior year of high school, he worked for a contractor after school and on weekends. After graduating, he earned an Associate in Science degree in construction management from Hartnell Community College while continuing to work in the trades. After the first year, he began working full time and continued with school in the evenings.

Once permits are secured, John oversees and coordinates the process from laying of the foundation, scheduling and construction to a walk-through with the homeowners. John also spends time scheduling and corresponding through email, messaging and phone calls with sub-contractors to keep the project on track. “It is nice working for a local company that cares about the quality of their product and their team members,” he says. “Mike, Tracy and the whole team are great to work with.”

Born and raised in Salinas, John, a licensed general contractor, has lived in Gonzales since 2000. Married to Greta for 21 years, the couple has three teenage children. In his leisure time, he enjoys fishing, biking and camping.

Discover country living in Greenfield and King City

Small town living is the first choice for many people. Yet, we all want to be close to services, shopping, activities and other conveniences that enhance our quality of life. There’s a real sense of community here in South Monterey County. It’s a place where you can get to know your neighbors, local merchants and those who staff your favorite spots. A place where you can run into people you know at restaurants, the library, shopping centers, farmer’s markets and community events. And you’re in the midst of nature’s beauty and bounty, surrounded by fertile agricultural fields and vineyards, a variety of parks, historic landmarks, majestic mountain ranges and wonders like Pinnacles National Park.

The long-established communities of Greenfield and King City are vibrant and rich with activities for the whole family that harken of yesteryear. Holiday parades, fireworks and festivities, 4H clubs, Little League, picturesque picnic and gathering spots, and a warm, welcoming sense that lets you know you’ve found home.

King City is home to the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds and annual Salinas Valley Fair. The community also hosts a number of public events, including a weekly Farmer’s Market and annual Christmas and 4th of July parades. It is also home to Mee Memorial Healthcare System, a municipal airport, a golf course, a community college satellite campus, performing arts center, a campground, and a variety of local parks and sports facilities.

The Greenfield area is home to some of Monterey County’s most prized wineries, well-equipped parks, youth and adult summer activities, holiday parades, fireworks and community events that bring people together to celebrate the seasons, and library programs that delight children of all ages.

Drive on down for a visit, take a walk through town, plan to attend a community event and see for yourself what good old-fashioned country living is all about.

Team Member Spotlight — Lois Pape

Team Member Spotlight — Lois Pape

Team Member Highlight – Lois Pape

The overwhelming consensus among her coworkers is that Lois is the glue that holds Nino Homes together. With Nino Homes since 2005, Lois has the universal respect of all who work with her, from project superintendents and subcontractors to city planners, engineers and other officials.

Some of her extraordinary skills include forecasting and planning, working and thinking ahead to keep the many facets of building neighborhoods of homes moving forward efficiently and on time. She’s the person people call when they need something done but aren’t sure who can do it. Lois will figure it out.

Her responsibilities span a wide range including working with cities on permits and necessary applications; helping Mike gather tract maps for city approval; preparing presentations to City Councils; keeping an eye on the company website; managing insurance coverages; creating public reports required by King City and Greenfield; and tracking down needed information. “I’m just one part of the team who does all this, it’s not just me,” she says with characteristic humility. “I do a little bit of everything. Whatever needs doing.”

“I love the variety of work I do here,” says Lois. “No two days, or even two hours, are the same. Mike and Tracy are very supportive of us and our families. A major benefit is that we are all treated like members of the Nino Homes family.”

Lois and Greg, her husband of 40 years, have two grown children, two young grandchildren and a “very active” Lab named Jethro. In her leisure time, she enjoys walking, hiking, and playing the role of sous chef while cooking with Greg.
